Media Think offers media literacy courses, training and presentations to groups. Our programs use a collaborative approach and address a range of topics, including: media violence, body image, health, news reporting, over-consumption and the environment, globalization, corporate influence, stereotyping, sexuality, brain development, addiction, and creativity.
Media Think serves as a resource for organizations and individuals with specific interests in media literacy. We provide reference material, online resources, contacts, handouts and other information.
Media Think acts as a catalyst for media change. By making the public more media literate and supporting media reform, we challenge media professionals to "raise the bar” - to be responsible and accountable for what they produce and disseminate.
We are exploring strategies and funding to develop these initiatives:
Discussion Course for Parents: The Discussion Course involves groups of 8-12 people meeting once a week for several weeks to discuss carefully chosen course-book readings. The meetings are peer-facilitated. Our first Discussion Course, “Media-Mindful Parenting,” is under development and is our primary fundraising goal.
Teacher Training Programs: Media Think will provide ongoing teacher support through department, school, and district-wide in-service presentations and workshops. The in-service approach is a well established way for teachers to expand their skills through intensive workshops on specific topics. We have delivered a successful Media Literacy In-service pilot with the Portland Public Schools, and we seek support for additional 2008-09 in-service programs as well as a summer 2009 intensive Media Literacy Institute for teachers.
Media Literacy Conference: Media Think will host and organize a day-long, annual conference to explore media’s influence and the essential role of media literacy education and critical thinking. The conference will appeal especially to teachers, parents, youth, and health professionals. The inaugural conference is being considered for fall of 2010.
